Food and Music

Every kind of cuisine has its own musical genre!

And there are two main explanations for this: one subjective (concerning the concept and aesthetics of the venue) and another, more scientific.

First: music sets the mood.

In fact, it is not enough to have furnishings that match the restaurant concept, or staff dressed accordingly.
The music must also have at least a link with the food presentation and the general atmosphere, and it should be chosen based on the type of customers one wants to attract.
Ultimately, it is the soundtrack to the entire experience of eating out.

And then, science: dozens of scientific articles have studied the relationship between music and food.

The most comprehensive, in my opinion, is “The Relationship between Music and Food Intake: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis” by a team of researchers at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The research analyzes 9 studies carried out between 1989 and 2020, dispelling some myths and confirming discoveries that someone may find “odd”.

First of all, the presence of music increases the desire for food. Although there is no agreement on the volume at which this should be played, the mere fact that it exists makes us more hungry.

And what about the genre? Well, rock music has been found to make you more prone to alcohol consumption (can you believe it?); classical music shifts our desire towards healthier and less caloric foods; jazz leads us to spend more, and pop music to be more careful with money.

In the presence of high-tempo songs, a higher intake of foods has been observed (there seems to be unanimity in this).

Oh, and Opera can increase food enjoyment. I guess it does because of its Italian nature…

However, I’m not a music expert, but I can recommend some good songs (mostly rock) for your playlist.
