How many Flavours of Gelato?

How many flavours of Gelato are there?

Ok, first of all, let’s specify what is Gelato and what’s the difference with the generic term Ice-Cream:

An Ice-Cream is a frozen dairy dessert made from cream or butterfat, milk, sugar, and flavoring sweeteners.

Gelato is an Italian-style Ice-Cream. His name literally means “frozen“.

Its main characteristics are: a lower fat content, a lower percentage of overrun (i.e. the presence of air “captured” in the preparatory mix), and a greater presence of milk and, if necessary, of fresh or concentrated product to give the aroma .
This makes the product softer and more enjoyable on the palate, in exchange for a shorter conservation time.

So, making story short: Gelato is a type of Ice-Cream. A premium-quality type, if I may.

That been said: how many flavours gelato out there?

Assuming you can make a flavor from almost anything edible (using common sense, hopefully), the possibilities are virtually endless.

The Italian Association of Artisans (which include gelato-makers) has registered about 600 of them, all over the world.

This list includes the most popular flavours (pistachio, strawberry, chocolate hazelnut, coffee, etc..), as well as the less common ones. I’m not sure it also has some of the most extravagant existing flavours such as smoked salmon, bacon, wasabi and, hear hear, Scottish haggis (invention of the Jannetta’s Gelateria in St.Andrews, Scotland (of course…).

Ok then, 600 seems like a pretty encompassing number, isn’t it?

Well, there is who wants to overdo it: the American chain Gelato Fiasco (I hope the name bodes well for them) offers the possibility to order online by choosing from 1500 flavours, including some tempting ones such as Strawberry Champagne Sorbetto and Brown Sugar Ricotta.

By the way, I sell second-hand (but still first quality) equipment to make gelato….
