Let’s raise awareness about Cenosillicaphobia!
Yeah, yet another weird phobia you’ll read about on social media…
What is it? Well, none other than the phobia of finding yourself with an empty glass.
Some versions specify that the glass is lacking in beer…
The etymology shows a mix of three words:
“κενός” (kenós), which means empty +
“silica“, which I imagine derives from the Latin “Silicius” to indicate the component of common glass, Silicon dioxide (I guess “vitrum“, which simply means glass, wasn’t sounding pretty enough) +
Φοβία (phobia) which, as you well know by now, means irrational fear.
Those who suffer from this disorder may therefore have moments of despair when looking at the bottom of their glass. Or show nervous and aggressive attitudes. Even experiencing real panic attacks…
The possible remedies seem to be two: go to a psychotherapist, or order a refill before it’s too late. Until the money runs out. Or you end up in hospital. Or in prison.
Jokes aside, this phobia seems like BS to me.
There isn’t even a single scientific reference. Nothing can be found on PubMed, Google Scholar, or on any scientific papers portal. Nor any “original” article that doesn’t take up what bounces around various blogs and posts.
There is only a small mention of Wiktionary. An entry on Wikipedia dated 2005 and deleted almost immediately, with the rather eloquent motivation of “probable nonsense“.
Anyway… whether it exists or not, drink responsibly!
