Everyone loves pizza.
Even those you probably don’t expect to.
Specifically, I am talking about the former President of North Korea: Kim Jong-il.
His relationship with the Queen of Italian cuisine began at the end of the 90s. Just when the North Korean population was licking the wounds brought by the Great Famine (which the grotesque propaganda baptised as the “Arduous March“).
The Dear Leader invited an Italian “pizza chef instructor”, Mr. Furlanis, in order to instruct his chefs (and some High officers).
Furlanis later wrote about this experience which, calling it “peculiar” would be an understatement.
He recalled how the students, in utter silence, wrote down everything He was saying. But really everything…
One of them even asked how many centimeters the olives had to be apart from each other.
Just a few years later the first real “pizzeria” opened its doors.
Its name wasn’t too original: Italy Pizza.
But they were tremendously serious about it: the Chefs were sent trained in Italy. And all the raw materials imported from the “Boot“.
It is said that Kim Jong-il, in his infinite wisdom, decided that the people should also try that delicacy of the palate.
It’s a shame that the vast majority of people couldn’t afford to dine out. Let alone some food made with ingredients imported from the other side of the world.
However… there is also a promotional video on YouTube.
It may be due to my déformation professionnelle, but what catches the eye are the oven (produced by an Italian company that no longer exists), and the pizza sheeter (produced by an Italian company that still exists…).
Anyhoo, the pizza is extremely thin for my liking…
On the website of the Koryo Group, the only travel agency in the world authorized to organize tours of Pyongyang, you can read the only existant review:
the pizza is excellent.
They even say

I hardly think so.
