Do you drink bitter coffee?
Well, you may have psychopathic tendencies.
Sounds just like click-bait, huh?
However, these are precisely the conclusions of a scientific study, then taken up by various newspapers around the globe.
Let’s delve a little deeper, shall We?
In fact, these are indeed the conclusions of a scientific study, done by Tobias Greitemeyer and Christina Sagioglou, researchers from the Leopold-Franzens Universität, Innsbruck (Austria).
The title is quite evocative: “Individual differences in bitter taste preferences are associated with antisocial personality traits“.
In summary: in two studies (on a total sample of 953 people) a questionnaire was submitted to detect anti-social traits, and in which, evidently, preferences regarding the bitter taste were asked.
Well, the conclusion is that:
“bitter taste preferences are positively associated with malevolent personality traits, with the most robust relation to everyday sadism and psychopathy”.
Uhmmm.. a bit of a hasty generalization, don’t you think?
In the same academic circles, doubts were raised: the study found just a “very small association” between a taste for bitter things and the so-called anti-social traits (they called it “Machiavellian“… proof that they misunderstood also what that means!).
And almost everyone agrees on the fact that these studies need a much larger audience interviewed.
Have you ever heard the statement: “correlation doesn’t mean causation“?
Well… that!
