So… pizza!
How many toppings are too many?
Last January, a Scottish TikToker (it’s always one of them…) called Darren Dowling, ordered a pizza from Domino’s with 25 toppings, only to later regret both the exorbitant price (64£) and the taste, which was too “chaotic”, so to speak.
Ok, 25 is objectively too many. You probably would have gotten there even without reading about this experience.
So, is there a middle ground? Well, what I can tell you is that I’ve been around the web a bit, and it’s not easy to find advice about it.
In general, pizza makers recommend adding 3 to 5 toppings.
The recommendations are more focused on the fact that the toppings must go well with each other, making sure that they create a “consistent” flavour, and that they balance well on the pizza.
Last, but not the least, the ingredients must be skilfully placed before, during or after cooking, depending on the type.
In conclusion, allow me to give my very personal guidelines for pizza toppings:
– Yes, 3 to 5 seems like a good compromise for me too.
– Both mozzarella and tomato sauce count as toppings. Not the basil tho, come on!
– The fact that you can put anything on a pizza doesn’t mean you have to!
– As far as I’m concerned, you can also put pineapple in it. It’s not me who has to eat it!
