Is the old lady frying the eggs? Or poaching them?
This is the dilemma lying behind this splendid painting that Diego Velázquez, a Spanish artist of the Baroque period, painted around 1618 when he was just 19 years old.
In fact, it is still the subject of disputes today whether the grandma is frying the eggs in olive oil, or, as some art scholars have recently written, the eggs are rather poached.
To be precise: “they are being cooked in water or broth“.
Anyway… if you want to admire this painting, go to the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh.
If you want to fry or poach eggs (or whatever you want), I have the right catering equipment for you!
PS: the painting is (still) called “Old Woman Frying Eggs“
