The First Lady and the White House Kitchen

When FDR was elected for the first time at the White House, his wife, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, aimed to shape a more active role for herself as “First Lady”. She knew being a public figure means a huge responsibility in front of the nation. Especially during the Great Depression.

So, among other things, she decided to make the White House’s Kitchen into a sort of studio to show millions of households this new conscientious cookery: a way of cooking meals using readily available, economic ingredients.

To make that possible, she insisted on refurbishing the kitchen with modern and efficient equipment. And she gave the responsibility of the operations to an old friend of her, Mrs. Henrietta Nesbitt.

Henrietta was not a good cook; apparently, she was not even a half decent cook.

The meals were horrible. It didn’t take much for the legend about those grey, tasteless, dreary dishes to spread all over Washington DC. Rumours said that guests were warned to “eat properly at home beforehand“.

So, maybe a brand-new refurbished kitchen won’t make a top chef of you.
But if you are a good cook already, you should consider it!
Well… that’s my uninterested opinion, obviously…
